"Do Now" Worksheets
Below is a set of introductory ("do now") worksheets for a possible activity when students first enter the classroom. The worksheets are designed to be printed and worked out with pencil by pairs of students. Each should take a five to ten minutes while computers are being passed out and set up:
- Do Now #1: Paper Turtles: a pencil and paper exercise that uses paper turtles and pseudocode to demonstrate commands, attributes, and sequential execution.
- Do Now #2: Where in the World?: a series of challenges reviewing coordinates both on the xy-plane and latitude and longitude in the formats used for GIS activities.
- Do Now #3: CSV Files: a preview of the comma separated values (CSV) files that the US Geological Survey uses to disseminate information about recent earthquakes.
- Do Now #4: Paper Turtle Loops: a return of the paper turtles and graph paper exercises to demonstrate the flow of definite loops.
- Do Now #5: Plotting Quakes: plotting earthquakes by hand, illustrating the actions that are automated in this session.
- Turtles to Print: The first and fourth sessions use paper turtles as markers. This file has a page of turtles to print and cut out.
