As part of NYC OpenData Week, come join this hands-on workshop exploring publicly available datasets using the Python programming language.

• Virtual workshop on Tuesday, 14 March, 5-6pm (access information send directly to registered participants).
• Register via open-data.nyc.
• Assumes no previous experience.
• Activities are browser-based. For the later activities, having a gmail account will allow easier access to the Python notebooks which can accessed directly via Google Research's colab or can be downloaded from our github repo (stjohn/datasci/openDataWeek).

Overview

We'll start with a showcase of what's possible with NYC OpenData and its uses across computer science at Hunter College.

Next, we will:

1. Getting started with Python: using turtles to map GIS data of NYC libraries,
2. Using structured data: who gets the most parking tickets (using pandas),

And if there's extra time:

• Making HTML maps (using folium): mapping WIFI locations and 311 calls.
